ABSTRACT

RELIGION AND PROGRESS.

PREMISES OF THE TOTAL STATE IN C. DAWSON AND R. NISBET

The French Revolution was an axial event in European history. The radical social changes of modern times, the total reconstructions of society according to a religion of progress, and the consolidation of state powers as an institution with extended sovereignty over society provided an important framework for the understanding of the premises of the total state. In this article, we focus on C. Dawson’s conception of religion and progress, as well as R. Nisbet’s analysis of the philosophy of J.J. Rousseau, whose principles inspired the French Revolution and contained some of the premises of totalitarianism.

Keywords: religion, progress, French Revolution, totalitarianism, total state.
