ABSTRACT

PETRE ȚUȚEA AND THE SECURITATE – 1964-1989

Our study focuses on the relationship between Petre Țuțea and the Communist Security Service after his release from prison in 1964. We aim to decipher the mechanisms and methods used by the oppressive institution against the man regarded by many as the “Socrates of the 20th century.” The identity of informers or agents, their biographies, or their backgrounds were not of particular interest to us, as we considered the topic of informers too broad and still too recent to address at this time. The communist regime relied on the Security Service to maintain control over the population, and in individual nonconformist cases, it aimed to subordinate or even eliminate the free spirit. Many were imprisoned or terrorized, and some were subjected to both treatments. Petre Țuțea, the main subject of our investigation, was affected by these tactics, being labeled as an “enemy of the people” even after serving his prison sentence. The study analyzes the impact of these actions on the individual and society in general, highlighting the more or less subtle methods used by the communist regime to maintain its power.
